| My sprouts have grown quite tall, about 3 feet, and have lots of foliage on them and look fantastic.Unfortunately the sprouts, instead of being tight little balls, are all bushy and loose. What have I done wrong?.What can I do to avoid the same thing happening again. |

hi patchy what seed did you use?? was it f1 as i am told that if you use f1 seed you do not get the sprouts blowing even if the soil is not firmed down but all the books say you must plant in very firm soil

All mine were blown last year, this year I staked them against canes from the beginning and every so often stamp down the soil around the plants. It seems to have worked and all looks good, touch wood.

Thank you Spuds and Stevens for your replies. The sprouts were given to me as seedlings by a neighbour,I don't know what variety they are but I'm pretty sure they are not F1.
I did plant them in freshly dug ground so I am assuming that the soil was too loose. It is a lesson learned and I will know better next year. |

Hi patchy Two things that could make your brussels blow are too much goodness in the soil and not firm enough ground. I hoe my brassicas up and then stamp on the soil around the base of the plants with my heel. They are standing up without staking this year. Do not make the mistake of feeding them because you get really big plants but no sprouts. They should start blowing from the bottom up. You may still get some at the top if you are lucky. Just pray for some cold weather to slow down their growth. Second thoughts just hold off the praying until my green tomatoes have gone red.

| Thank you Tony,I've noted your advice and will do better next year.I hope your tomatoes ripen,I lost mine to the dreaded blight. as we gardeners say there is always the opportunity to improve next year, but we all know that next year will bring a completely different set of problems. |
