Whats the cost of your allotment? My allotment from Clitheroe Borough Council is £35 per annum for 10 poles! In Rickmansworth I paid £5 for this privilege. Am I alone paying excessively or are there others out there at exorbitant cost!!! Can you tell me if you can find it - the average price for an allotment of ten poles!!! I can then write to my Town Clerk!!!

On my last plot in Leeds - £28.00 a year (with £10.00 water added on top). No "facilities" (adequate fence, shed, toilets (???)) or "services" (manure, paths mowed, repairs, support for new plotters).
But, to be a killjoy ( :) - a nice one though! Honest! :) ), even that wouldn't cover the cost to the council tax payer of the allotment site? £5.00 seems an extraordinarily good deal, given the cost of land and what it could have been used for?
All best - Gavin

| Well, just so you can compare uk prices to overseas prices. My allotment is in the netherlands (near maastricht, moved here a few years ago). I have a plot which is 150 m2and pay 13.50 eur per year, incl water.not sure what that is in real money.Facilities are pretty good, the whole site is fenced off,so no vandal problems. thankfully, though that doesn't seem to be a problem here anyway. |

i have a allotment in wolverhampton and I pay £9 per year, which i thought was quite reasonable as it can grow some award winning weeds.

Here in Crewe and Nantwich we pay 16.50 GBP a year (50% discount to pensioners) for a plot of about 150 sq yards. Our site has water taps about every 8 plots but no loo. Most other sites do have a loo. We can have sheds and greenhouses. The council weed spray main paths and vacant plots and supply leaves and wood chippings. We also get loads of turkey house litter (stinks!!) from a local farmer. I have 2 plots but half of my second turned out to have equisetum (horse tail) over it. This is out of action while I spray it with amicide (ammonium sulphamate). Next year will be better!
I demand the unconditional surrender of all slugs. |

Just moved to a new house in St Helens and have applied for an allotment. It will cost £50 which I thought was reasonable until I entered this forum! They are all securly walled off with regular water supplies and a shed and greenhouse on each site.
If taking over an overgrown plot is it the custom to have your rent reduced? When taking on a new plot what state should I expect it to be in? totally cleared of weeds or still overgrown? Thanks |

I have been asked by the Committee of the Sevenoaks Allotment Holders Association to investigate the cost of allotments in other areas. If you have any information which would help me in this matter, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi- we just took on allotment yesterday and thought the price very reasonable but very specific! £19.36 for the year for a plot which is 213.2 sq m. "Subs" are another £1.75 for the year and there is a key deposit of £10 which we will only get back if we leave and return the key. Hope that helps with the research. Joy |

Hi folks, thanks for all the info.. this is proving such an interesting thread with such widely varying costs and facilites offered that we are considering whether we can produce some sort of interactive map comparing and contrasting allotment provision and the support offered throughout the UK... hopefully could be very thought provoking... so please keep posting! |

Hi everyone Here in Preston Lancs we pay £20.50 per year with reduction of 50% for concessions. For this we get main paths mowed, border fences maintained, water from stand pipes and occasional deliveries of wood chippings. Ours is 20m x 40m - took it over in June and got it free as was covered in weeds higher than me (and I'm 5ft 4"!)
